I attended the imat-uve workshop on “Emission and Odor of Plastics” held in Shanghai on July 20th and 21st, 2017. This event attracted over 80 attendees from various vehicle manufacturers (including BMW, VW and BAIC) and material suppliers.
The first day of the workshop gave special attention to developments in low-emission components, odor analysis methodologies, and the legal and technical requirements for regulation of vehicle interior emissions.
Innovation of product emission testing equipment and development of new products was the focus of the second day. With Dr Michael Holzwarth of imat-uve, I presented on the application of Selected Ion Flow Tube Mass Spectrometry (SIFT-MS) to measurement of VOC emissions. Dr Holzwarth shared his firsthand experience and data using SIFT-MS for interior material testing. The two major parts of his presentation were to:
- Show the good correlation of the SIFT-MS results with GC and HPLC results
- Emphasize how the speed of analysis can help solve complex emission source identification problems within 10 minutes rather than days or even weeks.
Our presentation was well-received and we obtained some valuable feedback from the audience.
Thank you imat-uve for organizing an excellent workshop and for the invitation to present! We look forward to the next one.
