At 6am Saturday morning at Syft, states of awakeness varied. But CEO Doug had planned for us a mountain bike/whitewater rafting teambuilding adventure, so leaving bed was well justified.
The bus dropped us at the start of the popular St James Walkway, where we would start the day with a cycle along the serene Magdalen Valley toward the Upper Waiau River.
After sweating out the initial uphill, the subsequent downhill was much enjoyed as the gorge opened up into wide meadows – not called a “hidden valley” for nothing! A bit more riding had us reach Tin Jug Hut for a well-deserved lunch break. Next challenge: shoehorning ourselves into wetsuits and rafting gear! The team that wears skintight neoprene together….
A quick briefing from the raft guides, then we launched right into the thick of it. The Syft team pulled together and found their sea legs quickly – although friendly rivalry resulted in unexpected swimming for some! Over the next few hours, we conquered rapids of varying difficulty, paddled picturesque gullies, and all made it out together and back to civilization… but not before a debrief at the Culverden pub. Thanks Doug for a great day out!
Here at Syft we have a great team that not only enjoys working together, but also getting out and about together in our wonderful part of the country.
